PROMISE Study
Eligibility
Families in the Greater Los Angeles area who are:
- Currently pregnant and have an older child with a confirmed autism diagnosis, OR
- Have an infant under 9 months of age with an older sibling with a confirmed autism diagnosis
- Monolingual Spanish-speaking families are welcome and encouraged to participate
Purpose
The goal of the PROMISE Study is to identify early movement-based markers of autism in the first year of life. We know that infants who have an older sibling with autism have a higher likelihood of developing autism and/or broader developmental differences. By using wearable sensors and standardized assessments, we aim to develop objective, reliable tools for earlier autism detection, giving families access to support during the critical early window when the brain is most responsive to intervention.
Involvement
Participation in the PROMISE Study involves 5 visits over the first two years of your infant’s life, including:
- Having your infant wear small sensors on their arms and legs to capture movement data over two days
- Standardized developmental, motor, and behavioral assessments
- Video recordings of free play
- Parent questionnaires and brief online surveys
- Parent interviews to gain further insight into your child’s development and behavior
